Bagamoyo is a historic coastal town in Tanzania on the Indian Ocean and an important witness to East Africa’s trading and colonial history. In the 19th century, it was a major port, a starting point for caravan routes into the interior, and a center of the ivory and slave trades. It briefly served as the capital of German East Africa in the late 19th century. Today, Arab trading houses, German colonial buildings, historic mission stations, and the ruins of Kaole reflect the town’s diverse past. With its beaches, cultural heritage, and vibrant arts scene, Bagamoyo combines history with a relaxed coastal atmosphere.
