Description
Torit is the capital of Eastern Equatoria and the road hub between Juba and the Kenyan border, a low administrative town on the edge of the Imatong foothills. Its name belongs to the mutiny of the Equatoria Corps that opened the first Sudanese civil war, though nothing on the ground marks it. What brings the few travellers here lies fifty kilometres east, where the Otuho village of Ilieu climbs a rock hillside in dry stone terraces under a hereditary rain king. Thatched granaries stand between the walls, and the drive out is why most itineraries stop in Torit at all.
