Description
Bor is the river town on the eastern edge of the Sudd, the vast papyrus swamp the White Nile spreads into on its way north. The swamp is a Ramsar site and roughly triples in area when the flood comes, which governs everything here, the roads, the fishing and where the Dinka move their cattle. In the dry months the water falls back onto the grazing flats, the channels hold still and boats can work them. The Sudd carries the largest population of shoebills anywhere, and the birding along its edge runs to hundreds of species.
