Description
Tlemcen stands at 800 metres below a wooded escarpment in western Algeria and was the capital of the Zayyanid kingdom, which made it the most refined Moorish city of the central Maghreb. Its Great Mosque keeps an eleventh century minaret and a carved plaster mihrab of exceptional quality, and the mosque and zawiya of Sidi Boumediene above the town remain a place of pilgrimage. The ruined Mansourah walls and lone minaret stand in open fields west of the centre, and the older Roman and Almoravid site of Agadir lies to the east. Waterfalls, caves and cedar slopes ring the city.
