Description
Constantine sits on a rock plateau split by the Rhumel gorge, a chasm up to 200 metres deep that runs straight through the middle of the city. Seven bridges cross it, and the slender Sidi M'Cid suspension bridge is the image the city is known by. Founded as Numidian Cirta and rebuilt by the emperor whose name it carries, it holds the Ahmed Bey Palace, the Emir Abdelkader Mosque with its twin minarets, and a dense old town of balconied houses hanging over the drop. Constantine is also the home of malouf, the Andalusian classical music of eastern Algeria.
