Description
Algiers (الجزائر) is Algeria's capital and largest city, rising in white tiers above a wide Mediterranean bay. The Casbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a dense maze of Ottoman houses, courtyards and stepped lanes above the harbour. Below it the French colonial quarter spreads out in arcaded boulevards around the Grande Poste. The basilica of Notre-Dame d'Afrique looks across the water from its clifftop, while the vast Djamaa el Djazaïr and the concrete arches of the Martyrs' Memorial mark the modern skyline. Museums, the Jardin d'Essai botanical garden and a long seafront promenade round out one of North Africa's most layered capitals.
