Description
Tamanrasset is the largest town of the Algerian deep south, a low red settlement at 1,300 metres that serves as the capital of Tuareg Algeria and the base for the Hoggar mountains. Adobe streets, a busy craft market and a mix of Tuareg, Saharan and West African traders give it a frontier character quite unlike the north. Charles de Foucauld built his first hermitage here, and his chapel still stands. Every expedition into the volcanic peaks of the Atakor, to the hermitage at Assekrem or south towards the Niger border is organised from the town.
