Description
Tipaza is a coastal town west of Algiers where a Roman city lies scattered along low cliffs above the sea. The UNESCO listed archaeological park holds a forum, two basilicas, a theatre, a nymphaeum and Christian necropolises among pines and wild fennel, with the Mediterranean visible from almost every stone. Inland stands the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania, a vast circular tomb of the Berber kings that predates the Roman town. Albert Camus wrote about the ruins and the light here, and the site remains a favourite weekend escape for Algerians. Fishing harbour, beaches and seafood restaurants sit alongside the antiquities.
