Oran, Algeria

Oran

Algeria · 100 m

Description

Oran is Algeria's second city and its most outward looking, a Mediterranean port stacked around a bay under the limestone hill of Aïdour. The Spanish fort of Santa Cruz and its chapel crown the summit and give the classic view down over the harbour. Below lie the Ottoman casbah, the ornate Théâtre Régional, the Place du 1er Novembre and the domed former Great Synagogue. Oran is the birthplace of raï music, and its nightlife, seafood and beach suburbs make it the liveliest city on the Algerian coast. Albert Camus set The Plague in its streets.
