Description
Béjaïa is a port city on the Kabylie coast, built where the Djurdjura mountains drop straight into the Mediterranean. Above the town the Gouraya National Park covers a limestone headland of pine forest, sea cliffs and coves, with the shrine of Yemma Gouraya on its summit and the pale wall of Cap Carbon beyond. The old town keeps its Hammadid gates, an Ottoman fort and a small casbah. Béjaïa was a major medieval trading port where Fibonacci learned Arabic numerals, and it remains the gateway to Kabylie, a Berber region with its own language, villages and mountain roads.
