Description
Annaba is a port city in Algeria's far north east, set between a wide bay and the wooded Edough massif. On a hill above the town stand the ruins of Hippo Regius, the Roman city where Augustine served as bishop, with its forum, villas and cisterns still traceable in the grass. The Basilica of Saint Augustine rises beside them and holds a relic of the saint. Below, the Cours de la Révolution is a long plane-shaded promenade of cafés at the heart of city life. Beaches, the corniche road to Seraïdi and coral fishing traditions define the coast around it.
