Description
Thakhek (ທ່າແຂກ) is the capital of Khammouane Province in central Laos, beautifully situated on the banks of the Mekong River opposite the Thai city of Nakhon Phanom. The relaxed provincial town is known for its French colonial architecture, laid-back atmosphere, and scenic riverside promenade overlooking the Mekong. As the starting point of the famous Thakhek Loop, it attracts nature lovers and motorcycle travelers eager to explore the region's dramatic limestone karst landscapes, turquoise lagoons, caves, and traditional villages. One of the area's greatest highlights is Kong Lor Cave, a spectacular river cave stretching approximately 7.5 kilometers, widely regarded as one of Southeast Asia's most remarkable natural wonders. Combining colonial charm with breathtaking scenery and an unhurried pace of life, Thakhek is one of the most rewarding destinations in central Laos.
