Si Phan Don (ສີ່ພັນດອນ), also known as the “4,000 Islands”, is a vast river archipelago in southern Laos, where the Mekong River splits into countless channels near the Cambodian border. The region is renowned for its scenic islands, traditional villages, spectacular waterfalls, and the rare Irrawaddy dolphins. Among the best-known islands are Don Khong, Don Det, and Don Khon, which attract visitors with their relaxed atmosphere, riverside bungalows, and picturesque landscapes. Highlights include the mighty Khone Phapheng Falls, the largest waterfall by volume in Southeast Asia, and the historic French colonial railway bridge linking Don Det and Don Khon.
