Description
Pakbeng (ປາກແບງ), also spelled Pak Beng, is a small village on the banks of the Mekong River in northern Laos, best known as the overnight stop on the Slow Boat route between Huay Xai and Luang Prabang. The village stretches along a steep main street lined with simple guesthouses, local restaurants, and small markets, offering visitors an authentic glimpse of everyday life on the river. Pak Beng combines the relaxed atmosphere of a traditional Lao village with the unique character of a staging point where travelers from around the world gather each day. Sunsets over the Mekong, the lively morning market, excursions to nearby Khmu and Hmong villages, and the nearby Mekong Elephant Park make it far more than just a place to spend the night. Despite its modest size, Pak Beng is one of the best-known destinations along the upper Mekong and an integral part of many journeys through northern Laos.
