Luang Namtha (ຫລວງນໍ້າທາ) is a lively small town in the far north of Laos and the country's main gateway to the Nam Ha National Protected Area, one of its most important conservation areas. The town is renowned for its unspoiled natural surroundings, remarkable ethnic diversity, and community-based ecotourism. Multi-day treks through dense forests with overnight stays in Akha, Khmu, and other hill tribe villages are among the highlights, alongside cycling through rice paddies, boat trips on the Nam Tha River, and visits to traditional markets. The morning market and the provincial museum offer insights into the cultures of the many ethnic groups that shape the region.
