Vientiane (ວຽງຈັນ), also known as “Viangchan”, is the tranquil capital of Laos and the country's political, economic, and cultural center. Situated on the Mekong River opposite Thailand, the city combines traditional Lao culture with French colonial heritage and a relaxed atmosphere that sets it apart from many other Southeast Asian capitals. Its best-known landmarks include the gilded stupa Pha That Luang, the national symbol of Laos, the Patuxai Victory Monument, and the historic Wat Sisaket with its thousands of Buddha images. Along the Mekong riverside promenade, markets, cafés, and restaurants invite visitors to linger, while temples, museums, and monuments offer insights into the country's history and culture.
