Tataouine, Tunisia

Tataouine

Tunisia · 240 m

Description

Tataouine (تطاوين) is the base for the ksour, fortified Berber granaries built as honeycombs of barrel-vaulted storage cells stacked four and five high around a courtyard, put up from the twelfth century onwards so that semi-nomadic families could leave grain and oil safe while they moved with their herds. Ksar Ouled Soltane is the one everybody photographs. George Lucas took the town's name for a planet and shot at several of the ksour, which is why some of them now carry film plaques alongside the grain hooks.
