Description
Hammamet (الحمامات) has been Tunisia's resort town since the nineteen twenties, when a Romanian millionaire built a villa in the orange groves and a European set followed him, and it kept a rule that no building may stand taller than a cypress. The result is a low white town behind long sand beaches with a small fifteenth century medina and a Spanish fort on the point. Yasmine Hammamet, the purpose-built marina resort south of it, holds most of the newer hotels and works as a separate place entirely.
