Description
Tunis (تونس) holds one of the best preserved Arab medinas in North Africa, seven hundred monuments inside a walled maze that has been on the UNESCO list since 1979 and still works as a market rather than a display. The Zitouna Mosque at its centre has been running since the eighth century. Outside the walls the French built a grid of ochre and cream boulevards along Avenue Habib Bourguiba, and the Bardo Museum, in a nineteenth century palace, holds the largest collection of Roman mosaics anywhere in the world.
