Description
Dougga (دقّة) is the best preserved Roman small town in North Africa, seventy hectares of it spread over a hillside of olive groves with the theatre, the capitol, the baths, the market and the private houses all still legible in their original street plan. Because it was never built over, you walk the actual paved streets. The Libyco-Punic mausoleum standing among the Roman buildings predates them by two centuries and carries a bilingual inscription that was the key to deciphering the Numidian language. UNESCO listed it in 1997.
