Description
Bizerte (بنزرت) is the northernmost city in Africa and the one Tunisian port the French held on to until 1963, fifteen years after independence, because the harbour behind the channel was worth a fleet. The old fishing port is still the picture of the place, a rectangle of water with painted boats under the walls of the kasbah, and the Andalusian medina behind it is lived in rather than shown. North of the channel the coast turns into long sand and low cliffs that run to Cap Blanc, where the continent ends at a headland with a lighthouse.
