Description
Djerba (جربة) is a flat sandy island off the southeast coast, joined to the mainland by a Roman causeway, and it takes more package holidaymakers than anywhere else in Tunisia. The beaches on the northeast side carry the hotel strip. What makes the island unusual is the rest of it, a scatter of low whitewashed mosques and fortified farmhouses across palm and olive country, and El Ghriba at Erriadh, which claims to be the oldest synagogue in Africa and remains the focus of a Jewish pilgrimage each spring. UNESCO listed the island's settlement pattern in 2023.
