Tozeur
Tunisia · 50 m
Description
Tozeur (توزر) is the largest of the Djerid oases, four hundred thousand palms watered by two hundred springs, and its old quarter of Ouled el Hadef is built from yellow bricks laid in raised geometric patterns that are unique to this corner of the Sahara. It sits on the northern edge of Chott el Djerid, a salt pan the size of a small country that shimmers into mirages at midday. The mountain oases at Chebika and Tamerza are an hour northwest, and several Star Wars sets survive in the desert south of town.
