Description
Taghit is a small oasis in the Saoura valley where a ruined ksar of red mud brick sits between a long palm grove and the towering dunes of the Grand Erg Occidental. The dune wall rises directly at the edge of the village, which makes it the easiest place in Algeria to walk from a hotel bed onto open sand within minutes. Rock engravings of cattle, ostriches and hunters are cut into the outcrops nearby and date back several thousand years. The village fills up for the winter dune festivals and empties again into a quiet of palms and wind.
