Description
Paramaribo is the capital of Suriname and holds most of its people, a Dutch colonial town of white painted timber laid out on a grid beside the Suriname river. UNESCO listed the inner city in 2002 for that architecture, which fuses Dutch proportions with Caribbean verandahs and local hardwood. The cathedral of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is built entirely of cedar and is among the largest wooden buildings anywhere. A synagogue and a mosque stand side by side on the Keizerstraat. Fort Zeelandia guards the bend where the town began. The Waterkant along the river is lined with the old warehouses of the trading houses.
