Apoera

Apoera sits on the Surinamese bank of the Corantijn with Guyana on the far side, a village of under a thousand people founded around 1920 by the Gordon family and still mainly Lokono Arawak. In the mid 1970s a seventy kilometre railway was laid from here into the Bakhuis mountains to bring bauxite to a deep water quay. Test trains ran and then the project was abandoned, and the line has never carried a commercial load. The track and the port works are still there in the bush. Washabo and Section are the neighbouring villages. The Corantijn is the border with Guyana, and the two countries still dispute its southern headwaters.
