Description
The Blanche Marie falls are a long staircase of rapids and drops where the Nickerie river cuts through the Bakhuis mountains, more than three hundred kilometres south-west of Paramaribo and one hundred and fifty-eight metres of descent from top to bottom. A rough road built for a bauxite project that never happened is the only way there, and the drive takes the best part of a day. A small lodge and a set of carbets stand in the forest above the water. Nobody else is usually there. Apoera on the Corantijn is another two hours west. The Nickerie rises in these mountains and runs north to the rice polders.
