Description
Albina sits on the west bank of the Marowijne opposite Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, and the river between them is the frontier with French Guiana. Pirogues and a vehicle ferry cross it all day. The town was a prosperous river port until the interior war of the 1980s burned most of it, and what stands now went up afterwards. It is the road head for the whole east, where the tarmac from Paramaribo ends and boats take over for Galibi downstream and the Maroon villages upstream. Aluku and Ndyuka traders sell along the landing. The German trader August Kappler founded the post in 1846 and named it after his wife.
