Description
Colakreek is a creek running through white sand savanna near Zanderij, and the tannin leached out of the surrounding forest stains the water the colour of the drink it is named after. It is warm, shallow and completely clear when you lift it in a hand. The banks were laid out as a recreation ground in the colonial years and the place has been where Paramaribo takes its children ever since, with lawns, jetties and a rope swing under the trees. Sunday is the busy day. The airport is a few minutes away by road. The sand here is the same white quartz the savanna is made of.
