Description
Brownsberg is a flat-topped hill of five hundred metres standing over the Brokopondo reservoir, and the drive up ends at a ridge where the forest opens onto water that reaches to the horizon. The reservoir was made in the 1960s by damming the Suriname river, which flooded dozens of Saramaccan villages and left dead trees standing in the shallows. Trails drop off the plateau to the Leo and Irene falls. Eight monkey species live in the canopy here, and howlers are heard long before anything is seen. Small-scale gold mining has eaten into the slopes at the edge of the reserve.
