Description
Maracas Bay is the beach of Trinidad, a deep horseshoe of coarse yellow sand backed by coconut palms and closed by forested headlands on the wild north coast. The road over the Northern Range to reach it climbs through rainforest to a lookout above the sea and is half the outing. What people actually come for is bake and shark, fried shark in a fried bread pocket dressed at a long counter with tamarind, garlic and shadon beni sauces. The surf is strong and lifeguards patrol the flagged section. The drive from Port of Spain takes about forty minutes.
