Description
Grande Riviere is a village on the remote northeast coast of Trinidad with one of the densest leatherback turtle nesting beaches on earth, where up to five hundred females can come ashore on a single night in the peak weeks. The beach is barely a kilometre long, which is what makes the concentration so extreme. Nesting runs from March into August and hatchlings emerge from June. A permit and a guide are required after dark. Behind the village the rainforest holds the piping guan, a bird found nowhere else. The road there is long and winding, and the village has no bank or petrol station.
