Description
Lake Natron is an extraordinary soda lake in northern Tanzania near the Kenyan border and ranks among East Africa's most remarkable natural landscapes. It is renowned for its striking red and orange hues, created by salt-loving microorganisms and mineral deposits, as well as for its highly alkaline waters. Surrounded by a barren volcanic landscape and the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai, the “Mountain of God” of the Maasai, the lake offers a spectacular setting. Despite its extreme conditions, it supports a highly specialized ecosystem and serves as the most important regular breeding ground for East Africa's lesser flamingos. Lake Natron is considered one of Tanzania's greatest natural wonders and a unique ecosystem within the East African Rift Valley.
