Katavi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most remote and pristine protected areas, offering an extraordinary safari experience far away from the country’s better-known northern routes. The vast park is characterized by open floodplains, seasonal rivers and untouched miombo woodlands that support a remarkable diversity of wildlife. During the dry season, the remaining water sources along the Katuma River attract spectacular concentrations of animals, with large groups of hippos gathering in shrinking pools and huge herds of buffalo roaming the surrounding plains.
