Description
Damaraland is the broad stretch of stony desert and basalt mountains between the Skeleton Coast and the Etosha plains, held almost entirely in communal conservancies rather than national parks. Desert-adapted elephants move along the dry Huab and Hoanib riverbeds, and the Palmwag concession holds the largest free-roaming population of black rhino left anywhere. Tracking either means going out with community guides on foot or by vehicle, with no guarantee of a sighting. Damara and Herero settlements are scattered across the plains, and the whole area is known for its emptiness and its enormous skies.
