Description
Copán is known as the “Athens of the Maya world” and ranks among the most important archaeological sites in Mesoamerica. This UNESCO World Heritage Site in western Honduras, near the Guatemalan border, is renowned for its exquisitely carved sculptures, intricately decorated stelae and altars, and the monumental Hieroglyphic Stairway, which preserves the longest known Maya hieroglyphic text. The Sculpture Museum, home to a full-scale reconstruction of the vividly painted Rosalila Temple, offers a glimpse of the splendour of Classic Maya architecture and art. Together with the charming town of Copán Ruinas, nearby hot springs, and a sanctuary for scarlet macaws, Copán is one of the cultural highlights of Central America.
