The Bay Islands (Islas de la Bahía) are an archipelago of three main islands and numerous smaller cays off the Caribbean coast of Honduras. Located along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the world's second-largest coral reef system, they are among the Caribbean's premier destinations for diving and snorkeling. Roatán is the largest and most developed island, Utila is renowned for its many dive schools, and Guanaja offers a quieter, more secluded atmosphere. Shaped by their Caribbean heritage and a lasting British influence, the islands have a culture that differs markedly from mainland Honduras. Alongside Spanish, an English-based Creole is still widely spoken. Combining white-sand beaches, lush tropical landscapes, and a relaxed island lifestyle, the Bay Islands are considered one of Central America's most beautiful travel destinations.
