Cayos Cochinos

The Cayos Cochinos (Hog Islands) are a small archipelago of two forested islands and thirteen sandy cays located about 30 kilometres off the northern coast of Honduras near La Ceiba. Protected as a marine natural monument, the archipelago forms part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the world's second-largest coral reef system, and is renowned for some of the Caribbean's best-preserved reefs and outstanding snorkelling and diving. Crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral gardens and secluded beaches define the islands. The two main islands, Cochino Grande and Cochino Pequeño, are covered in tropical forest and are home to the endemic pink island population of the boa constrictor. Several of the cays are inhabited by Garífuna communities whose traditional fishing practices and rich cultural heritage continue to shape island life. Accessible only by boat, the Cayos Cochinos are considered one of Honduras' most unspoiled natural treasures.
