Description
Bridgetown is the capital of Barbados and the arrival point for the great majority of visitors, since the deep water harbour takes cruise ships and the island's only airport lies a short drive east. The centre and the military Garrison beyond it form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an unusually complete survival of a British colonial port town with its Parliament buildings in coral stone Gothic and a synagogue founded by Sephardic refugees in the sixteen hundreds. Carlisle Bay curves away south with wrecks lying in shallow water. Mount Gay has been distilling rum here since a deed of 1703.
