Description
Bouaké is the second city of Côte d'Ivoire, set in the Baoulé country in the middle of the country on the railway that runs from Abidjan to Ouagadougou. The grand mosque of 1889 is the oldest building in town and carries pointed openings along its front. Around it the central market spreads over several blocks and draws traders from the whole savannah belt. The town was the seat of the rebellion that split the country for five years from 2002, and the rebuilt centre still shows where the fighting reached. Baoulé mask carvers and weavers work in the surrounding villages.
