Boorama sits high enough up in the Awdal hills to stay cool all year, which is unusual on this side of the Horn and is much of its appeal to the families who come back every summer. It is a university town and an orderly one, laid out along a single main street with the escarpment behind it. The ruined medieval town of Amud on a hill nearby is the real sight, a scatter of stone walls and tombs from a trading settlement that predates everything around it.
