Short description of Laas Geel
Laas Geel is a cluster of granite overhangs above a dry valley on the Berbera road, and under them are some of the best preserved rock paintings in Africa. Long horned cattle in red and white wear ceremonial collars, and the people standing among them have their arms raised. The pigment is extraordinarily fresh because the shelters keep off both rain and direct sun. There is no fence, no visitor centre and no crowd, only a ministry guide who must come with you and a permit bought in Hargeisa. It is a half day out.
