Short description of Gaalkacyo

Gaalkacyo is cut clean in half by an administrative line, with the northern part run from Puntland and the southern half from Galmudug, and that divide has shaped the town for thirty years. It is a busy trading centre on the road between the north and the capital, but it has a long record of foreigners being taken for ransom, and the aid agencies fly in rather than drive. No sight here is marketed to anybody, and the town shows up only as a single night on the long overland run through Puntland. It appears in this list mainly as one of the country's larger towns.
