Samoa is an independent island nation in the South Pacific, where the traditional way of life known as fa'a Samoa remains strong. Upolu, home to the capital Apia, offers the To Sua Ocean Trench, a swimming hole reached by a long ladder, as well as Lalomanu Beach and the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum.
Savai'i, the larger and quieter island, has lava fields, the Alofaaga blowholes and the Afu Aau waterfall. Open beach fales, traditional thatched huts by the sea, are the classic place to stay.
