Description
Savai'i is Samoa's largest and least densely populated island, known for its volcanic landscapes, rainforest and traditional village life. Highlights include the lava fields of Saleaula, with ruins left by the 1905–1911 eruption of Mount Matavanu, the Alofaaga Blowholes, where waves send seawater soaring through natural lava tubes, and Afu-Aau Waterfall with its natural swimming pool. Rising in the island's interior, Mount Silisili reaches 1,858 metres and is Samoa's highest peak. Lava caves and the Falealupo Canopy Walkway add to the island's natural attractions. Savai'i offers an authentic experience of Fa'a Samoa, with a slower pace and a quieter atmosphere than more developed Upolu.
