Mauritius is a volcanic island in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar, ringed by coral reefs, lagoons and white beaches. Its luxury resorts, the kitesurfing lagoon of Le Morne and the underwater waterfall illusion off its southwest coast are its best known sights.
Inland, the Black River Gorges and the coloured earths of Chamarel offer hiking and viewpoints, and Port Louis has a lively market and the Aapravasi Ghat, listed by UNESCO. The mix of Indian, African, French and Chinese cultures shows in the food. English and French are widely spoken.
