Its three great cirques, Mafate, Cilaos and Salazie, are listed by UNESCO, and Mafate can be reached only on foot or by helicopter.
The Piton de la Fournaise is one of the most active volcanoes on earth, and the Piton des Neiges is the highest peak in the Indian Ocean. The west coast has beaches and lagoons. The euro is the currency, and French is spoken.
