Description
Le Morne is a striking peninsula on the southwestern tip of Mauritius, dominated by the 556-meter-high Le Morne Brabant and a vast lagoon. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is closely linked to the history of slavery, as escaped enslaved people once sought refuge on the mountain, which has become a symbol of resistance and the pursuit of freedom. Its wind-swept lagoon makes Le Morne one of Mauritius’s premier destinations for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Inland, the colorful landscapes of Chamarel and the Black River Gorges National Park add forests, waterfalls and dramatic scenery. Together, Le Morne’s mountain, lagoon and surrounding landscapes combine nature, adventure and history.
