Travel to the British Indian Ocean Territory
The British Indian Ocean Territory is the Chagos Archipelago in the central Indian Ocean, a chain of coral atolls with some of the cleanest reefs on earth. Its largest island, Diego Garcia, is a military base, and the Chagossians were forcibly removed from the islands in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
There is no tourism. Only sailing yachts may visit the outer atolls with a permit, anchoring for a short stay. Mauritius claims sovereignty over the archipelago, and a transfer with the base remaining has long been under negotiation.
