Description
Karakol (Каракол) lies on the eastern shore of Issyk-Kul at the foot of the rugged Terskey Ala-Too range. The city is an important base for trekking, mountain adventures, and winter sports in Kyrgyzstan, and a gateway to Ala-Kul Lake, which sits at around 3,500 meters. Nearby, the Jeti-Oguz Valley is known for its striking red sandstone formations, the “Seven Bulls”. Karakol blends Kyrgyz traditions with Russian and Dungan influences. Highlights include the Przhevalsky Museum and the intricately carved wooden Dungan Mosque. In the Altyn-Arashan Valley, natural hot springs invite visitors to relax, while the surrounding mountains offer opportunities for hiking and horseback riding.
